Alaska Summary and highlights

For those are statistically minded here are our numbers for Alaska:

Distance from Canada Border (Carway), the Alcan Highway, Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula, Valdez, Tok, Cassiar Stewart Highway and back to the American border (Oroville).  Total 5667 Miles = 9067 Kilometres

We crossed into Canada on June 27th and crossed back to USA on September 10th.  Total of 75 days or 11 weeks

We were in Alaska State from July 20th to September 2nd. Total of 44 days (6.3 weeks), therefore in Canada for 31 days (4.4 weeks) travelling to and from Alaska.

Our average cost of accommodation was $29 per night.

Travelling cost us $0.67 per mile in fuel.

Groceries totalled $1420 – being $18.93 a day

Dining out totalled $540 – $7.20 mostly coffee and cakes.

Tours totalled $1753 (for both of us) which was 7 trips, some $30 each and some a lot more expensive. All pre-planned and pre-booked.

Some random pictures of our trip.

Everyone asks what is the most memorable (or favourite) things of the trip, that is almost impossible to answer.   We loved each of the places and the ‘larger than life’ and remote scenery including the big big mountains, deep valleys, windy roads, small roadside stops, the bigger towns with all the facilities of any city, wide rivers, glaciers, boat trips, fireweed in bloom on the road sides, the wildlife just wandering freely and appearing whenever.  I think it was the people we met and spent time with will always be the important part of our memories of Alaska and Canada.

Would we do it again, Yes!! but now we have driven up the Alcan and returned via the Cassiar I think we would fly to Anchorage or Fairbanks and rent a camper and do some of the more remote places such as “The Top of World Highway” to Chicken and Dawson City, we would like to get to the Prudhoe Bay and also Tuktoyaktuk and even Nome (only accessible by plane).
